Fort Payne Water Board Written by Carol Beddingfield 6/7/2010
Congratulations to the FortPayne
Water Board.Once again a clean bill of
health has been given to the overall operation of the water department.
Our tap water meets all the US Environmental protection
Agency and Alabama Department of Environmental Management drinking water health
standards.
Drinking water, including bottled water, may contain at
least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water
poses a health risk.
Lead and copper in our water supply is a concern for
many. These two metals can be found in
our natural resources for water supply. They are sometimes used in household plumbing materials or in water
service lines which connect to the home.
There are steps that you can take to reduce exposure to lead
in drinking water.Let the water run
from the tap before using it for drinking or cooking. The water should run about 15-30 seconds.
Although the flushing of toilets, the use of showers and
laundry appliances does flow water through a portion of your home’s plumbing
system, you still need to run the water from the facet before using it for
drinking or cooking.
Try not to cook with or drink water from the hot water
tap.Hot water can dissolve more lead
more quickly than cold water.
By letting the water run for a few seconds, you are
protecting the health of your family in a very simple and inexpensive way.
This method usually uses less than one gallon of water.
