Our Nation's Birthday Written by Carol Beddingfield 7/1/2009
As we celebrate our nation’s
birthday on July 4th, let us remember the freedom that our flag
represents.Let us not take lightly the
words to the pledge of allegiance.
The first pledge was written in
1892 as part of a Columbus Day celebration marking the 400th
anniversary of the discovery of America.
The United
States had recovered from most of the effects of the
Civil War and people from around the world were coming to the “Land of Opportunity.”
Printed in “The Youth’s
Companion”, the pledge was recited by over 12 million school children during
the 1892 celebration.Today, schools
remain the catalyst in promoting our rights, freedom, and future.
Join others at FortPayneHigh School stadium as we celebrate the
Fourth of July festivities on Thursday, July 2nd, beginning at
dusk.Music and refreshments will be
provided.Fireworks will even be better
than last year.
On behalf of the Chamber Board of
Directors, Donna and I wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday.
As you enjoy the rush of the
holiday, please take time to renew your pledge of allegiance to our country.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
