Easter Written by Carol Beddingfield 4/9/2009
Easter baskets are a symbol of the holiday. What would Easter be without baskets filled to the brim with candy treats such as jellybeans, peeps, toys, and the wonderful chocolates?
How does this tradition evolve from one of the most religious holidays? Easter as a holiday is the result of many different cultures and religions combined.
In ancient times, food for the large feast that marked the end of lent was brought to the church in baskets. Thus began the connection to treats in an Easter basket today.
Our ancestors however never picked the plastic grass out of the yard or carpet for a least a year. It was easier then to find a lost egg hidden in real grass. The smell led the way!
Call the Chamber for a listing of businesses who will create the perfect Easter basket for your loved ones.
One of the most significant connections of Easter to these ancient religions is that the date is based on astrological signs. Easter occurs on the Sunday after the first full moon following Spring Equinox. Day and night are equal in length during the equinox.
Today, many people believe in planting on Good Friday. I would take advice from businesses such as Petal Pushers, Turf Tamers, Twelve Oaks Landscaping, and Eden Keeper. I am sure Fort Payne Feed and Seed can advise you with your vegetable plants.
Of course my favorite Easter tradition is the story of the dogwood. Take a few minutes to study the bloom. Fort Payne is fortunate to have so many of these trees adding beauty to our scenic landscapes.
The First Presbyterian Church will host the daily services before Easter Sunday. Call 845-2915 for more information. Asbury United Methodist Church will hold the sunrise services. Contact them at 845-4169.
On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors, we wish everyone a very Happy Easter.
