Census Bureau Written by Carol Beddingfield 12/24/2008
The news of layoffs in the hosiery industry brings great sadness to our close knit town. No one is excluded from the impact of the closing of these mills. You are affected directly or indirectly through friends and family.
I realize that the decisions made are for the survival of the company. I also know that the leaders of our community are making every effort to ensure that Fort Payne will continue to be strong in the job markets.
You have heard the old saying, “I am from the government and I am here to help you.” Well, one department of the government can help you get through some of these tough times through employment.
The U.S. Census Bureau is taking applications for positions within the 2010 Census operation. Full time and part time positions are available. The salary range is very competitive – from $8.00 to $16.50 per hour.
Positions will vary from field workers to office jobs. The number of hours will be different according to the position.
The census means more than just employment for our area. The following is determined by the population count in our area: apportionment of the seats in the House of Representatives, the drawing of the state legislative districts, the distribution of more than $300 billion annually in federal, state, local, and tribal funds, and the determination of sites for new businesses.
The Census Bureau will be taking applications for field and management positions at the Chamber office on Monday, December 22nd and 29th at 9:00 AM. You must show two forms of identification such as social security card, driver’s license, birth certificate, or military id.
On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors, Donna, and myself, I want to wish everyone the very best holiday season. Please remember the reason for the season. May God bless each and everyone of you.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
