Vote Written by Carol Beddingfield 9/30/2008
August marked the 88th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment to the Constitution. The amendment guarantees all American women the right to vote.
This amendment was considered by many Americans as a radical change of the constitution. Women were jailed and sometimes physically abused during the decades of struggle for the amendment’s passage.
The amendment was certified after three-fourths of the states agreed to its ratification on August 26, 1920.
It is hard for me to imagine that my ancestors did not have the right to vote in our democracy. In this year’s election process, women not only have a right to vote but they have the opportunity to vote for women candidates.
According to Joyce Buttram, DeKalb County Board of Registrars, voter registration continues to grow. The largest increase has been in the younger age group. Women continue to be a large representation of the growth.
The deadline to register to vote in the municipality elections on October 7th has passed. However, the deadline for the general election is October 24th.
Driver’s license number or the last four digits of the social security number is necessary to register. Actual proof must be presented at the polls.
