Everyone knows Mike Rowe of TV’s “Dirty Jobs”. But did you know that he is helping Alabama recruit more students to our vocational educational programs?

Visit “Go Build” Alabama on the web. Mike was not given a script for the video. He speaks from knowledge gained not only from his shows but also from the experience of his father, a tradesman.

The infrastructure of our state was built many years ago. It is in dire need of a major overhaul. The passage of Amendment 3 on November’s ballot will help with some of the cost.

However, there are not enough skilled tradesmen to fill the necessary jobs for these improvements. Welders, brick masons, plumbers, electricians, carpenters are in critical need now more than ever.

Alabama needs 2,875 new construction tradesmen every year. 10.4% of the workforce in this field is female.

The average age is 47 for construction workers. The need for more trained individuals will continue to rise as these workers retire.

The median hourly wage for a carpenter is $21.08. Many of those who invest in four years of college will not earn this amount.

Faced with a growing shortage of skilled laborers and an aging construction labor workforce, the Alabama legislature established the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute. No tax dollars fund this project. Funding comes fro the construction industry.

America was not built from behind a desk. The Institute is working to educate young people, parents, educators, and others about the opportunities in the construction industry. The Mike Rowe ads will certainly grab everyone’s attention.

As Mike says, “Skill is always a matter of degree.”
