In 1945 DeKalb County was mostly a farming community. Also during that year under the AAA program, farmers were paid $6 per acre for establishing a satisfactory cover of Kudzu. In fact, a school was held to promote a new tractor method of growing kudzu.
A motto often seen at the time read, “The South will come into its own when its fields are green in the winter.”
Today, not only are some of the fields green but most of the areas along our roads are covered.
What is kudzu anyhow? It is a bean vine. The legume, Pueraria thunbergiana, to be exact. It grows like a Kentucky Wonder green bean plant on steroids, with a stalk nearly as large as the one that Jack climbed.
Propagating at the rate of a foot or more each day, Kudzu is an awesome plant.
According to tradition, most Southern mothers will keep a close eye on their kids during the summer months to prevent them from being choked to death in their sleep by a wayward Kudzu vine that has crawled through the bedroom window.
In fact in Alabama, the legend says you must close your window at night to keep it out. Even so, the glass is tinged green the next day.
Do you want to see what the real Kudzu looks like? Get your tickets to the 2011 Krazy Kudzu Follies at the DeKalb Theatre on March 3, 4, & 5th at 7:00 PM. Price of ticket is 2 for $20 or $15 each and can be purchased at the Chamber Office or at Bruce’s Foodland Plus.
Our Kudzu will cover you in laughter. Using laughter as the best medicine, the cast is able to cure a lot of “ills” in our community.
