Tax Incentives
4/20/2011
I hope that you got your personal income tax filed by the deadline of Monday, April 18th. Most of us feel that the old adage “Two things that are certain in this world are death and taxes” is so true this time of the year.
It is now time for owners to concentrate on filing the business tax reports.
There could be some tax breaks coming to small businesses in Alabama.
The Alabama House passed a bill that would allow qualifying employers and employees to deduct from their state income tax an additional 50 percent of the amount spent on health insurance premiums. If enacted this bill would increase the 150 percent deduction up to 200 percent.
Qualifying employers are those with less than 25 employees and the qualifying employees are those whose annual wages do not exceed $50,000.
The bill would help the smallest, most vulnerable, yet essential employers provide health coverage to their employees. The measure is considered an incentive for job creation. Most employees today are more interested in a health package than in more pay compensation.
Another tax credit being considered by the state legislature is part of the Full Employment Act of 2011. This act, sponsored by Rep. Blaine Galliher of Etowah County, will provide a one-time tax credit to small businesses who hire additional employees.
Businesses with 50 or fewer employees will receive an income tax credit equal to $1,000 per new job paying more than $10 per hour.
There are a lot of businesses who could qualify for both of these tax incentives in our area. Our economy is dependent on the ability of our small businesses to generate jobs.
Please voice your support for to our legislators for the passage of these business incentives.
