All businesses must register with E-Verify

Regardless of the size of your business, you must enroll with the federal E-Verify System. Under the new immigration law Alabama enacted last year, every new employee in Alabama, no matter their nationality or place of birth, must be deemed employable.

Why do people come to the United States illegally? They come here to work. Therefore, companies must be part of the solution in addressing the problem of unauthorized employment.

As of April 1, every employer, including religious, civic and non-profit organizations, must sign up to use E-Verify. More than 288,000 employers across the United States have used E-Verify to check the employment eligibility of their employees. About 1,200 new businesses sign up each week.

I registered the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce. The process was very simple online. Go touscis.gov/everifyto register your company. When on that page, look to the right under the column headed "Start Here.” Click the third item, "Enroll in E-Verify,” to start.

You will be assigned a password and an administrator identification number. You will need this information to add or check status of future employees.

If you have problems with online registration, call 1-855-VERIFY-6 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Do not forget the chamber’s After Hours on April 26 at 5 p.m. at the Traditional Square II at 2207 Gault Ave. N. The merchants are working hard to ensure that you have a great time. Door prizes and refreshments will be provided.

Get ready also for the annual Art at the Barn at Sweet Seasons Farm in Valley Head. The Mannings have planned another fun filled event on May 5 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. I have seen a lot of the artists and craftsman work. You do not want to miss this outdoor festival.
