Heart Month
2/22/2012
Although many people think of
heart disease as a man’s problem, over 42 million women live with
cardiovascular disease. Many are unaware
of the threat they face.
Heart disease is the number
one killer of women in the United States, killing more than a third. It is also a leading cause of disability
among women.
More than 200,000 women die
each year from heart attacks. – five times as many women as breast cancer.
23%
of women compared to 18% of men will die within one year of a first recognized
heart attack. Women are less likely to
receive appropriate treatment after a heart attack.
However,
heart disease is preventable. Many women
can significantly reduce their risk of heart disease if they have the
information they need, know the questions to ask their doctor, and receive the
support to make heart smart changes in their lives.
There
are 3 significant factors related to heart disease in women: 1) family history; 2) over the age of 55; and
3) African American, Hispanic, and Native American descent.
There
are also 3 immediate actions that women can take to help prevent heart
disease: 1) stop smoking; 2) get active;
and 3) have less stress.
The
Krazy Kudzu Follies can definitely relieve your stress. Laughter still remains the best medicine.
During
February, which is Heart Month, buy your favorite lady a ticket to the Follies
performances on March 1, 2, & 3rd at the DeKalb Theatre at
7PM. Tickets are $15 each or 2 for $20. They are available at the Chamber Office or
at Bruce’s Foodland.
