Chamber Chatter
Chamber Breakfast for April
4/21/2008
I want to thank everyone who has called, sent cards or food, or kept David and me in your prayers during his recent hip surgery. His recovery is going to take a little longer, but he is doing great. I cannot imagine facing health issues without insurance. I can truly understand how many individuals either do not seek medical help or risk financial devastation if they do. But an equal problem is not having an advocate for you during this critical time. David and I have had some chuckles over our different interpretation of the doctor’s instructions. The citizens of Fort Payne are very fortunate to have an organization that serves those among us who cannot afford medical care. The DeKalb Interfaith Medical Clinic opened its doors on September 6, 2001. The clinic is an acute care facility, treating illnesses that will respond to medications. The volunteer staff will also refer patients for necessary diagnostic procedures and treatment beyond the scope of care the clinic can provide. Many local professionals have agreed to see a specific number of patients in their offices free of charge. Referrals are also made to hospitals and clinics which provide services on a sliding scale according to income. The clinic’s board of directors bought the old Williamson Oil building in order to provide future growth of this ministry. Volunteer labor created two waiting rooms, a triage room and several exam rooms. The volunteers who provide the services include licensed doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, dietitians, and counselors. Office personnel, phone volunteers and patient advocates keep the clinic running. There are many other volunteers who offer their particular skills in assisting patients in improving their life situations. Words of praise and appreciation cannot adequately express my gratitude to this special group of people who have truly made a difference in the lives of so many in Fort Payne. Please join the public to see Fort Payne’s greatest volunteer project in action at the Chamber’s Coffee on Thursday, April 24th at 7:30. The DeKalb Interfaith Clinic is located at 917 Godfrey Avenue, S. Call June Reed at 845-2549 for more information. Krazy Kudzu Follies will be May 1, 2, & 3rd at the DeKalb Theatre at 6:00 PM. Tickets are going fast. Bruce’s Foodland and the Chamber Office are ticket outlets.
